Garbage is one of the biggest problems before Pune. Garbage issue has acquired serious dimensions and serious efforts must be taken to resolve it. Even though awareness has been created among residents for disposal and segregation of garbage, dumping waste in open spaces along the road is a common sight near vegetable markets. Vegetables and plastic bags had been dumped in space along the road near Raviwar Peth. This litter raises a stink. Such places are haven for rats, mice and pathogens. People say flies and mosquitoes have made their lives miserable. During monsoon, it is the possibility that commuters or pedestrians may meet with accidents because of wet garbage spilled on road. Drainage from dumps contributes to pollution of surface and ground water and also the rainwater run-off from these dumps contaminates nearby land and water thereby spreading disease.
