“Many more buses will operate during vacations. We want transporters to make necessary safety provisions in buses to avoid accidents.Every bus must have fire extinguishers, emergency entry-exit door and stairs to get down without difficulty . We also want transporters to ensure drivers are trained well to drive on highways as well as on city roads,“ said an RTO official.
Fire extinguishers were missing in several buses. In some buses, the fire extinguishers were present but were non-functional. In most cases, drivers and cleaners did not know how to use them.
Many transporters had evaded tax; fitness permits were not renewed. Some buses had more passengers than the stipulated quota.
The total fine collected is over Rs 75 lakh, an RTO official said.
Taking note of these gross violations, RTO officials plan to call a meeting of bus transporters to remind them about the necessity of adhering to safety measures and what travelers expect from them.
RTO officials said they re ceive feedback from travelers. People often complain about delays, halting of buses at unknown placesdhabas, overspeeding, rash driving at night.
