Pavana river is the main source of drinking water for Pimpri-Chinchwad. Every year, during winter and summer, there is massive growth of water hyacinth which has created a mosquito menace in Pimpri, Pimpale Gurav, Sangvi and Dapodi. Water hyacinth has spread all over the Pavana river from Ravet to Dapodi. Thus, PCMC has finally started to remove water hyacinth from the Pavana river. The civic body had earlier invited bids from private contractors to remove the hyacinth but, after getting a poor response, has decided to do the work itself.
In recent weeks, the issue has been raised by corporators who are worried by the increasing mosquito population caused by the growth hyacinth. The health department has started removing the water hyacinth from the Pavana river at Ravet and Sangvi with the help of civic employees.
