Disposal of untreated domestic and industrial effluents in the pilgrim towns of Alandi and Dehu, coupled with heavy human activity, has resulted in the pollution of the Indrayani river, leading to occurrences of waterborne diseases like Acute Gastro Enteritis (AGI) among the local population and visiting pilgrims in both the towns, says a new study.
“As much as 1.75 per cent of local population suffered from AGI at Alandi and 1.53 per cent local population suffered from the disease at Dehu. Also, various health disorders such as itching of the skin, ear aches, throat irritation, and nausea were reported among pilgrims,”
