More number of pedestrians have fallen victim to mishaps in the city in 2012 as against the statistics of 2011. Thanks to lack of discipline on the roads and poor traffic infrastructure. According to the traffic police records, 113 pedestrians were killed in the 1,619 accidents in 2011. The death toll increased to 123 in 2012, with rise of 10 deaths.
Poor road conditions are also cited to be one of the reasons behind pedestrian deaths. Some roads do not have proper dividers and roadside trees are too tall in some areas which pedestrians cannot see properly at night. The police also claimed that most of the accidents took place due to poorly-lit streetlights as most of the pedestrians cannot see the approaching vehicles from either direction, thereby cause mishaps. Administration should close the illegal divider punctures that were made for commercial purpose in the city.
A survey carried out by the Pune traffic police identified 38 road divider punctures at various locations in the city that are largely responsible for road mishaps. The study covered Pune-Ahmednagar Road, Aundh Road, Karve Road, Solapur Road, Pune-Satara Road, Senapati Bapat Road, Airport Road, VIP Road (Koregaon Park to Circuit House), Sinhagad Road, Bibvewadi Road, Kondhwa Road and Pune-Mumbai highway.
