In December last year, the Pune rural police had issued strict preventive guidelines for the revellers risking their lives to get perfect selfies on the Pune-Mumbai expressway and at various picnic spots located in and around Lonavla and Khandala.
Many people, especially from Mumbai and Pune, gather at Lonavla and Khandala during holidays. While partying, it has been observed, that many walk up to the edges of cliffs or bridges to take selfies on their smartphones. The expressway is another such spot where revellers climb on the parapet to take selfies without realizing the ramifications of their actions. The Pune rural police will put up flex boards at several places on the two picnic spots, including cliffs and near the bridge’s parapet, to caution people against taking `risky’ selfies.

The obsession with clicking selfies with complete disregard to safety is getting out of hand. We have seen youngsters climbing bridge railings on the expressway, standing in gushing water at the Bhushi dam or scaling cliffs in the fatal quest for a perfect selfie. When it comes to the expressway, the law enforcing authorities, including the highway police, IRB and Delta Force personnel, should strictly enforce the ban on selfies and give some exemplary punishment to curb this tendency. Such a vigil will be all the more necessary once monsoon revellers start thronging Lonavla and Khandala. Along with strict policing, self-discipline and self-regulation are equally important. Parents and heads of educational institutions have a vital role to play in this regard.
