Rs 1-cr UNDP-funded project to assess nearly 110 disaster-prone sites
Nearly 110 sites in Pune will be part of a pilot study on hazard and vulnerability risk assessment to be undertaken by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) — a first in the state. The report is expected by the end of this month.
Post the Malin landslide tragedy in 2014, the state government had faced considerable flak for not having a disaster management system in place. Now, Pune has been selected for the pilot study after which it will be replicated in other districts of the state. “The study is entirely funded by the UNDP and is worth Rs 1 crore. They have appointed TARU, an agency that studies hazard and vulnerability risk assessment. Such studies have been carried out for Uttarakhand and other northern regions of the country. The villages were chosen randomly and the study has been on for three-four months. The report is expected by month-end,” said Suhas Divse, Director, State Disaster Management.
He added that Pune district was selected for its complexity. The district has a large number of urban and rural areas, sees significant agricultural activities and is prone to disasters such as floods, landslides, terror attacks, industrial accidents and water scarcity. Once completed, the study will be assessed before a dynamic disaster management plan is put in place.
