PMC inspects digging sanctions, halts work

Mayor passes directive, instructing all mobile companies to stop their work of laying cables to scrutinise whether their permissions have been cleared
Corporators have shown their displeasure with the way private mobile companies are carrying on with their work of laying cables and digging footpaths and roads late in the night without informing Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Subsequently, city mayor Prashant Jagtap has given a standing order to stop all cable laying work on Monday. Also showing concern with the mobile companies’ work, Jagtap said, “People employed by mobile companies start digging roads without giving any prior notice to the corporation. This is a serious issue. No one knows about the legal status of their work. I have issued an order to the administration to stop all works by mobile companies in the city till they give detailed information of their work to PMC and corporators.“

In the general body meeting on Monday, corporators across the party displayed their disappointment with the work of companies in the city. The discussion started on the issue of giving a piece of land to the police department in order to set up a station in the Kharadi area. But, the corporators criticised the police’s adamant approach in different kinds of digging works by PMC’s departments, such as water supply, drainage and road. After strong criticisms, the civic body decided to allot the land to the police department.

An official working for mobile company, which is laying cables for a 4G network, said on condition of anonymity, “We have taken all the necessary permissions from PMC and have all the details. I don’t have any written order from the corporation to stop the cable laying work. I will comment on that after we get an official letter from the civic body.“

Arvind Shinde, leader of opposition of PMC, said, “There is no problem in giving land to the cops, but they unnecessarily stop PMC’s utility works, which affects the development of the city.“ Babu Wagauskar, party leader of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), said, “The corporation has to take permission from the police if it is constructing or digging roads, so that they can control traffic. But, there should not be any problem on footpaths as it is does not affect traffic at all. However, the traffic police department stops work and files complaints against our officials as they cannot take any action against the cable companies.“

Rupali Patil, an MNS corporator said, “We spend money from our coffers for development work. How can the police have a problem with that? It is true that if it could potentially affect traffic, PMC needs permission. For the work of mobile companies, police never stop or file complaint. This is a strange situation.“
