The Standing Committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PCMC), on Monday, approved a bid of Rs 171 crore to set up a new water treatment plant at Parvati. The work of the plant will be completed in the next 30 months.
Standing Committee Chairman said that the Centre has approved the project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to build a new water treatment plant next the existing water work at Parvati.
Under the JNNURM projects, the Central government bear 50 percent of the project cost, the State government gives 20 percent and the remaining 30 percent is borne by the local civic body.
City Engineer said that the PMC has 12 acres of land near the Parvati water treatment plant, which will be used for establishing the new treatment plant. The new plant will treat 500 million litres per day (MLD) of water.
This plant will mainly provide water to the Cantonment area. At present, there is a water treatment plant at the Cantonment but it is 125 years old. The leakage ratio is high in the Cantonment plant and it can malfunction any time.
The PMC has two water treatment plants at Parvati, each having a capacity of 250 MLD. The plants are old – one was commissioned in the year 1968 and the second one was built in 1970. Considering this, the PMC has decided to construct a new plant at Parvati.
In this project, the PMC will also set up a closed water pipeline from Parvati to the Pune Cantonment water treatment plant to supply the treated water and distribute it to other parts of the city.
