Low Pressure Area Can Form Over Arabian Sea
The commencement of monsoon withdrawal may have been delayed by almost a month this year, but its exit from the country is likely to be on it normal date of October 15 or earlier.
The southwest monsoon has further withdrawn from the remaining parts of east Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, some areas of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, the northern parts of Maharashtra and some more zones of Gujarat. Its exit from some more parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat can be expected during the next 48 hours, the officials said.
The normal dates of monsoon withdrawal from Mumbai and Pune are around September 29 and September 30, respectively.
“Over the years, monsoon withdrawal has rarely stuck to these dates. Monsoon completely withdraws from Maharashtra by October 15,” said A K Srivastava, head of the Climate Monitoring and Analysis Group, IMD, Pune.
“A low pressure area is likely to form over southeast Arabian Sea by October 5, after which it may concentrate into a depression and move northwestward during the subsequent 36 hours. This system may also intensify further into a cyclonic storm and move towards Oman coast,” he told TOI.
“We expect a slight delay in monsoon withdrawal from parts of Madhya Maharashtra, southern Maharashtra and Konkan as some moisture and rain may result from the formation of the cyclonic system,” Srivastava said.
“Monsoon may withdraw further from the northern parts of Maharashtra, including Vidarbha, some more areas of Bihar and Jharkhand during the next 48 hours,” Srivastava added.
IMD meteorology director general M Mohapatra said the cyclonic system may cause some rainfall activity in the coastal parts of Maharashtra, which may delay its exit from the coast. “Nevertheless, monsoon is expected to completely withdraw from India by October 15. It can happen even earlier,” he said.
Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist at Skymet Weather Services, said the system over the Arabian Sea may cause a delay in the withdrawal of monsoon from the coastal regions as it will bring some rain over Kerala, Konkan and Goa. Monsoon normally withdraws from Mumbai, parts of Madhya Maharashtra, including Pune, and Konkan by October 1,” he said.
