Open land and roads are among the most encroached upon places. Pune Municipal Corporation has identified 68 open properties belonging to the civic body and roads occupied illegally by traders and 27 sensitive spots in a survey after the attack on the anti-encroachment squad on Tuesday .
The drive had turned violent after a mob opposing the action attacked civic staff with iron rods and sticks pelted stones, injuring anti-encroachment department head Madhav Jagtap, additional commissioner Rajendra Jagtap and other civic staff members.
“The identified spots are in Kothrud, Satara Road, Kondhwa and Peth areas,“ additional commissioner Rajendra Jagtap told TOI.The administration has found 38 places on the roads that have been encroached upon.
The sensitivity of the spots was based on the locality and the background of the people running the illegal business. Ward offices, in association with the anti-encroachment department, carried out the survey . Some past data and histoof actions have also been ry of actions have also been used to finalize these spots, which may go up. The building permissions department too has carried out a survey of illegal constructions on civic properties.
“The administration will need a police force to remove the encroachments. We will send the details to the police commissionerate and a timetable for the action will be planned,“ Jagtap added.
The civic body in 2013 had declared no-hawking zones on 45 roads and 153 junctions in the city. As per the civic bo dy’s data, in the last three years, the civic body has acted against 5,000 encroachments.
As part of the drive, illegal sheds and houses built in an area of around 28 lakh sq ft in the slum pockets of Shivajinagar, Kasba Peth, Wadgaonsheri, Ambegaon, Kothrud, Katraj, NIBM Road and Pashan were demolished.
The civic administration has also taken action against encroachments in shopping malls. Unauthorized parts of malls in Vishrantwadi, Kothrud and Satara Road areas were pulled down too.
