A 26-year-old courier delivery agent died and two of his friends suffered injuries after a motorcycle on which they were riding triple seat crashed into cement pipes on the roadside.
The accident occurred on Monday night on the service road near Popularnagar on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass. They were not wearing helmets.
The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Brijesh Kamal of Warje, originally from Uttar Pradesh. The police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence and rash driving against Avinash Manohar Jogdand (27), who was riding the motorcycle.
The cement pipes were meant for pipeline work, which is in progress in the nullah along the service road in Warje.
A traffic warden, who was on duty around 10.30pm on Monday, witnessed the accident. “I was telling the driver of a private bus not to halt on the service road when I saw three men riding the bike at a high speed towards Chandni Chowk,” he said.
“Moments later, I heard a loud crash — the trio had crashed into the pipes, exactly where I had stood minutes ago,” he recalled.
One of the riders was injured on the head and unconscious, another had fallen on the roadside while the third had gone inside the pipe. “I alerted the police, who rushed the trio to the hospital in an ambulance,” the warden said.
“Between January and May, we have collected more than Rs30 lakh in fines from over 15,00 triple-seat riders,” said Vivekanand Wakhare, inspector of traffic branch (planning).
