Students of the College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP) were felicitated for building the Swayam satellite when the two-tier flyover near the college at Mumbai-Pune highway was named after the college. The announcement was made by city mayor Prashant Jagtap at an event on Tuesday.
Swayam was launched last week by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from Sriharikota. Students and professors were felicitated by scientist Raghunath Mashelkar. MP Supriya Sule was also present, along with other dignitaries.
The idea of naming the flyover after the college was raised by Sule. Following which, Jagtap announced, “PMC will name the ongoing bridge after the college to honour COEP’s work. Besides that, we will also provide Rs 5 lakh for research to the institution. We will also fulfil the demand of a skyway for the college students.“
The Rs 68-crore project includes a set of flyovers spanning the Sangam Bridge, CoEP Chowk and Mumbai-Pune highway, Sangamwadi Bridge, Sancheti Chowk, Simla Office Chowk and JM Road. The total cost of the bridge was Rs 50 crore. However, it has now increased to Rs 68 core. The work for the project started on December 1, 2012. The foundation ceremony was done by the deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. The date of completion of the flyover is December 31, 2015. But, the civic administration, the flyover will be completed at end of this year.
