Failure to treat sewage

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has seized Rs 1 lakh bank guarantee of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation for its failure to complete the sewage treatment plants in time. The corporation at present treats 210 MLD (million litres per day) sewage while releases nearly 80 MLD untreated sewage into Pavana and Indrayani rivers. The PCMC says it will be able to treat all the sewage only by March 2015.Untreated sewage goes into the rivers. This has polluted Pavana, Mula and Indrayani rivers. The rivers have become open drains.
The civic body had been directed to divert six nullahs to the nearby STPS so as to achieve the 207 MLD capacities of STPS by March 2011. But the civic body diverted only three major nullahs. The total installed capacity of 11 STPs is 297 MLD but only 210 MLD sewage is treated and remaining sewage is directly discharged into the local nullahs which lead to pollution in Pavana and Indrayani rivers.
The MPCB had directed the corporation to submit monthly reports of all STPs regarding chemical consumption, electricity consumption etc. The corporation, however, failed to submit them. The corporation was also asked to ensure proper chlorination at all the STPs. However, during an
