The Maharashtra government has officially declared drought in 123 talukas. With this backdrop, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to crack down on water wastage in the city.
The civic body decided to take steps to prevent water wastage. And they are starting with public water connections. According to PMC records, there are 2,500 such connections across the city.
Accordingly, supply to public water connections located in slum areas and on the roadsides will be cut. Most of these were constructed so that people could collect water from one common place instead of individual connections. These taps don’t have caps and water is wasted.
For this PMC have located such water connections which are not in use. Thus, it would not hamper the regular water supply in the area.Work is expected to begin next week. If all goes as planned, the corporation can save 4.8 crore litres of water in a day.
Public places where water is being wasted have been targeted. PMC is also launching a drive to impose fine on people who waste water while washing vehicles, for gardening, etc
Water figure:
1 water connection has 4 taps
2500 connections X 4 = 10,000 taps.
Assume that one tap releases 600 lit. water per hour,
Then the amount of water that would be saved: 10,000 taps X (8 hrs X 600 lit/hr) = 4,80,000 lit./ day
