The trustee of a road safety NGO, who champions the cause of use of helmets, has stressed the need for creation of a helmet culture in the city among two-wheeler riders to save lives of hundreds of citizens who die in road accidents.
Addressing a gathering of students, policemen and staffers of different colleges under Pune University on the occasion of Traffic Safety Week celebrations at Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), said that people should refuse to travel on bikes whose riders don’t wear helmets.
A helmet culture should be established so that citizens start wearing helmets compulsorily which will save lives of hundreds of citizens. We have seen deaths of many promising youths on the city roads as they were not wearing helmets. The citizens should come forward to help the policemen in carrying out law enforcement activity related to wearing of helmets.
Pune Police Commissioner said that, the rising number of fatal accidents highlighted that people were not wearing helmets. The function was organised by the traffic police and highway police in association with NSS of UoP.
Additional Chief Secretary (Home) has said that Pune University should carry out a detailed research on road accidents in the State.
