Closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras are going a long way in solving crime in the city.
Footage helped nab four masked men who had used a stolen car for robbing two software engineers last week.
Police, during investigation, analyzed the footage from CCTVs in the area and picked up the trail of the car found at Ramtekdi. This clue helped them arrive at a conclusion that a particular group was involved in committing a spate of robberies and vehicle thefts.
For five days, a trap was laid thinking that the robber would come to collect the car.After police shared a description of three of the four robbers named by the techies in their complaint with informants, the breakthrough came after one gang members was identified as Akshay alias Raodi Popat Padule (22) of Wadki in Hadapsar.
A hunt was launched to trace Padule, but his whereabouts were not known. Acting on a tip that he will visit Gosavi Vasti in Ramtekdi, a police team led by sub inspector Ravindra Bagul, policemen M H Bhosale and Kanifnath Karkhele laid a trap and took Padule into custody after he arrived at the spot on Sunday night.
“Padule’s interrogation turned out to be shocker after he told us about the involvement in two robberies including the looting of the software engineers outside Green Valley Co-operative Housing Society in Wanowrie on September 19 and a student outside the gate of Gool Poonawala garden in Salisbury Park on September 18. Two minors boys who abetted the crime were detained. The fourth suspect is on the run,“ senior inspector Sachin Sawant, in charge of the Wanowrie police station, said on Monday.
He said, “The trio have confessed to their involvement in six more cases including an armed robbery and a burglary reported in Dapodi and stealing four vehicles including a car and three motorbikes from Hadapsar, Wanowrie, Khadki and Vishrambaug since one and a half months. Padule, two minors and another suspect who is on run, are criminals on record.“
“The four-member masked gang belongs to a particular group. The gang stole vehicles and then committed crimes after which they abandoned vehicles like the car and motorbikes at isolated places,“ Sawant added.
