Nowadays, the city is suffering from many problems such as garbage, water supply, sewage water disposal etc. Here we look at the perfect example of how one can make the best out of such problems.Ovalnest is a housing society located at Warje, Pune. They are generating electricity using windmills, reusing sewage water, treating organic waste into manure that helps in beautifying their gardens.Sunil Mantri, the secretary of Ovalnest, said, “There are six buildings in our society. Each of six building has one windmill on the terrace and we are using the energy generated by windmills for lightening in parking and on staircases. Our light bills have been reduced.”
At a time when other Puneities are facing water cruch, the residents of Ovalnest never face such problem. Paresh Nimkar, one of the member of the society, said, “We have installed Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) where all waste water is being treated and reused for flushing and irrigation. The solid waste from all six buildings is segregated in dry and wet waste. The entire wet waste is managed with the help of vermicomposting plants that convert garbage into fertilizer. We use this fertilizer to develop our garden and we sell it too.”
“We harvest rain water by two ways; rooftop and surface rain water harvesting. In rooftop system rain water from roof is collected and stored in storage tanks and used for non-potable requirements. In surface rain water system, rain water that flows away from hill slopes behind the buildings is collected and irrigated in ground through the channels to improve groundwater table. ” Mantri added.
