35 tonnes of food waste is generated daily from hotels and restaurants located in the city. This is collected separately and transported to the Moshi garbage depot and dumped. Pimpri Chinchwad city is undergoing rapid urbanization. The population has increased from 10 lakh to 17.5 lakh in the past 10 years. As a result the number of hotels, eateries and canteens is growing in the city. The quantity of food waste generated in the city has also increased over the years. PCMC is also running some projects to prepare organic manure from food waste. The manure is used in municipal gardens.
The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation(PCMC) has decided to appoint a private contractor for transportation of food waste of hotels, canteens and other establishments to the Moshi garbage depot for processing at an expenditure of Rs 43.68 lakh.
