Discharge To Stop If Rain Subsides
The water storage at Panshet touched the 99.2%- mark on Monday evening, prompting the state irrigation department to discharge water from the dam — for the first time this monsoon — at the rate of 2,542 cusec. While the dam has a maximum storage capacity of 10.65TMC, on Monday, the water stock went up to 10.57TMC.
The irrigation department also released water from Khadakwalsa dam on Monday. The release from the dam was increased to 6,848 cusec later in the day. Officials had to release water from Khadakwasla as the dam had no space to accomodate the additional water flowing into it from the Panshet, which is located upstream.
Meanwhile, spells of rain continued in the catchments of all the four dams. Panshet and Varasgaon recorded around 6mm rainfall while Temghar received 9mm rain. The collective storage in four dams went up to 24.41TMC on Monday evening. The stock at Varasgaon climbed to 72.17%, while at Temghar it had reached 70.46%.
The water discharge from the Panshet dam will be stopped in the next couple of days if the rainfall intensity reduces further in the catchment areas. “On Monday, the catchments did not record too much rain. We will stop the water release if rainfall remains subdued for a longer period,” the officials said.
Temghar released water at 600 cusec
Temghar dam’s storage hit the 70%-mark on Monday, following which the irrigation department released water at the rate of 600 cusec. The released water is flowing into the Khadakwasla. The state government has initiated repair works on the Temghar dam’s wall. Hence, the dam will not be able to store water to its full capacity. The irrigation department is likely to maintain the water storage level in Temghar between the 70%-75% mark.
