Reminder: June 23 is last day for single-use plastics

Residents Must Remove All Such Products From Homes

Q. Dear PMC, when is the last day for housing societies to stop using all types of plastic? We need some clarity. What if we have a plastic jug or utensil we need to throw away? Should we separate it? What are the general rules of the plastic ban? (Meenakshi Iyer)

A. The last day for disposing all single-use plastics from homes is June 23. You do not have to do away with all the plastics being used at home. The ban is only on single-use plastic items such as plastic bags, plastic cutlery including plates, spoons, forks, glasses, etc. Thermocol products have also been banned and must be discarded before the deadline. Plastic items such as jars or bottles, which can be used for a longer duration are allowed. The rules ban only single-use plastics. (Suresh Jagtap, head of the PMC’s solid waste management department)

A. The complaints about this road have reached us. The roadworks on this stretch are now on the priority list. Works such as pipeline-laying are underway at the location — this is complicated work, which is why there have been delays. If we rush these works, there could be long-term problems for residents of the area. (Sunil Gaikwad, ward officer, Lohegaon area)

Q. Has the PMC resumed fumigation in the city. Mosquitoes have made a strong comeback in areas like Lohegaon (Anil Kalambi)

A. Water hyacinth and stagnation of water triggers mosquito breeding. The PMC has been removing hyacinth and creating awareness about insect-borne disease. Fumigation is taken up based on demand and need. (Kalpana Baliwant, head of PMC’s insect control department)

Q. How would you rate the progress of roadworks and monsoon preparedness in the city? Are you satisfied with the quality of roadworks? (Sumit Deshpande)

A. Contractors have been told to ensure minimum inconvenience to citizens. Projects in which work orders were issued will go on; no new works will be taken up. Nearly fifteen service vans have been deployed for quick repairs across the city. (Aniruddh Pawaskar, head of PMC’s roads department)
