SANITATION NEEDS – PMC turns role model for toilet construction

To ensure effective construction of individual toilets for nearly 11,000 households in Pimpri Chinchwad under the Swacch Bharat initiative, the civic body has decided to follow the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) model.

As per the model, the beneficiaries get funds only after a third party agency inspects the work. The third party agencies will get a fee for their work from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). The state government had recently asked all municipal corporations to implement PMC’s model which also includes guidance to households from NGOs or agencies. In Pimpri Chinchwad, each household gets Rs16,000 to construct individual toilets using funds provided by the central and state government, as well as PCMC, which aims to make the city defecation free by October 2, 2017. Pimpri Chinchwad, as per Census 2011, has 11,684 houses that do not have individual toilets. The civic administration has said that households that are given the funds do not complete the construction work in time. Therefore the PCMC standing committee approved a proposal to follow the PMC model.

Civic chief Dinesh Waghmare had recently urged re ntly urged representatives of Credai and NGOs to build individual and public toilets to make the city free of open defecation.

Joint commissioner Dilip Gawde said they will have a policy about construction of individual toilets with Credai.PCMC has to complete the construction in seven months, he said. Already , around 2,500 individual toilets have been built over the past year. A survey of old public toilets will be conducted and those in bad condition will be demolished and rebuilt, Gawde said.

Officials said the number of applicants for construction of toilets has increased over the last six months.

PCMC also plans public toilets along important roads and two BRTS corridors Dapodi-Nigdi and Nashik phataWakad phata.
