Initiative undertaken nearly 2 years after Malin tragedy
Nigh on two years after the devastating landslide at Malin that claimed 151 lives in the Western Ghats, the state government on Tuesday sanctioned Rs 3.5 crore to start immediate remedies at 10 high risk, disaster prone and landslide prone villages in the district.The funds were approved from the Disaster Mitigation Fund, after a survey carried out by the College of Engineering Pune (CoEP) marked these villages as `critical’, with immediate action required to mitigate landslides. The study was carried out on the instructions of the District Disaster Management Authority.
CoEP will officially submit its report in the next couple of days, but on the basis of the findings, the state has already swung into action. District collector Saurabh Rao said, “A detailed survey of 23 landslide-prone villages in the district was carried out and a report prepared. The state had sanctioned funds to take precautionary measures at these villages, including construction of walls, proper channelising of streams to bypass water flow, shifting people, etc. The villages have been identified as Bhagatwadi, Pasarwadi, Asane, Kalewadi and Bhendarwadi in Ambegaon, Mau and Bhushi in Maval, Dhanavali and Dehen in Bhor, and Ambavane in Velhe.“
