Pune city is at high risk of Ultra Violet (UV) rays, according to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). Experts say that the UV rays index of city has increased to 7, on the scale of unit zero to 11.
Ultraviolet Index is nothing but the intensity of UV radiation at a place and at a given time. Gufran Beig of IITM explained, “This year, we have recorded increase in temperature in the city, which can be attributed to the climate change and global warming effects. During the day, temperature has risen to 36 degree Celsius whereas in the night, it gets as low as 16 degree Celsius. The huge temperature difference is responsible in exposure to UV rays.”
The UV index is calculated from unit zero to 11. There is no risk from zero to four and from four units onwards the risk level starts increasing. “Exposure to UV rays can effect adversely on skin and can cause dehydration or dizziness,” Beig added.
