PMC promises special site to dump debris

Pune Municipal Commissioner has announced the creation of a special site for dumping construction debris from the city on Built Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.

The municipal commissioner presented the annual budget for the year 2014-15 to the Standing Committee with various plans in it. He has made a budgetary provision of Rs 66.07 crore for the solid waste management department.

The commissioner said that the debris generation in the city is high due to redevelopment and construction activity. As of now, there is no site in the city to dump the construction debris, which includes concrete, bricks, cement plaster and iron rods.

As per construction experts, about 100 tonnes of debris is generated in the city on a daily basis. As there is no place to dump this, the contractors either transport it outside the city or dump the debris in the riverbed or on the hills.The civic and environment activists have expressed concern over rivers getting affected due to this. In many instances, debris is dumped in the green belt of the rivers and nullahs, which is affecting their natural flow.

The civic administration has taken a note of the problem and has decided to resolve the issue in this fiscal itself. The commissioner did not mention the site for dumping the construction debris but said that the administration is planning to create space for the same on the BOT basis.

Municipal Commissioner has decided to clean the city with the help of machines. These machines will be used for road sweeping and open plots to improve the quality of sweeping. This will be done in the next fiscal.
