As the entire city is celebrating the Ganesh festival with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm, a dozen Ganesh mandals on Karve Road have decided to participate in the zero garbage project of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Janwani.
The initiative is to spread the message in every household in their area about the imperative need for garbage segregation at source and disposal in a scientific manner.
The mandals include Bharari Niwas Mitra Mandal, Khilarewadi Mitra Mandal, Erandawane Mitra Mandal, Swatantrya Mitra Mandal, Shrikrishna Mitra Mandal, Shreeram Mitra Mandal, Gokhale Smarak Mitra Mandal, Navnath Mitra Mandal and Vinayak Mitra Mandal, Ekta Mitra Mandal and Om Navnath Mitra Mandal.
The mandal members decided to organise an awareness drive by putting up exhibitions on the issue in their pandals. They would distribute pamphlets and organise puppet shows to educate the citizens on the zero garbage project.
Even after the Ganesh festival is over, the mandals have promised the participation of local citizens to decrease the number of garbage containers in their area.
