The increase in population of the city has impacted the villages in the outskirts. This results in severe garbage problem. Almost every locality in and around the city, depends on the civic body for clearance of garbage. The civic body, which is working hard to collect and dispose garbage from all over the city, is not in a position to provide garbage clearing facilities to villages in the fringe area. Consequently, these villages which are becoming a preferred option for residential as well as commercial projects are generating additional garbage, which is likely to emerge as a major problem soon.
While all the other villages are looking at the civic body for provision of municipal services, Mhalunge has taken a positive step, becoming independent as far as garbage clearing and disposal issue is concerned. It has become the first one to have its own garbage disposal system.
The village has undertaken a special drive for disposal of waste and it is spending its own money for this purpose. It does not get any financial assistance or any labourers from the Pune Municipal Corporation for this task. Villagers segregate wet and the dry waste in the village itself. “Wet garbage is dumped in a pit for decomposition. The villagers have contributed in purchasing a three-wheeler tempo for this purpose and have deployed six workers to ensure all the garbage generated by the village gets disposed regularly.
