Baner to replicate ‘Zero garbage project’

Pune generates nearly 1,300 tonne garbage everyday and the quantity is growing day by day as the population is increasing. Disposal of garbage is a burning issue due non-availability of disposal sites in the city. Currently, the city’s garbage is being sent to Uruli-Phursungi for disposal. However, local residents are opposing use of their land for disposal of garbage.
Taking into account the serious problems of waste disposal, PMC had carried out ‘Zero garbage project’ at Katraj. After this successful initiative PMC, Janwani (social initiative of MCCIA), SWACH and Cummins India Ltd are now going to replicate the ‘Zero garbage project’ at Baner ward 9.
Under this project, waste is disposed of locally to reduce load on dumping sites and also minimize transportation costs.
The PMC has also decided to involve corporate companies and NGOs in solving the garbage problem in the city and implement the ‘zero garbage’ scheme throughout the city. The funds for making all the wards garbage free will be raised through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives of the corporates.
