The India Meteorological Department said the few monsoon systems that formed during August remained unfavourable for several parts of Maharashtra, making it one of the driest monsoonmonths in decades. G P Sharma, vice-president (meteorology) at Skymet Weather Services, said there were no significant monsoon systems this August that could bring rain to central and western parts of the country, at least since the last two weeks. “Since a week now, the monsoon systems have only been favourable to east and northeast India,“ he said.
Pune, which is on the leeward side of the Western Ghats, did not get much rain. The coastal regions of the state also recorded poor rainfall. “The rain was very poor all along the Western Ghats, including Konkan and Goa. Hence, interior Maharashtra suffered as well.Usually , when coastal Maharashtra experiences good rainfall, there is some spillover of those rains on the leeward side too. This did not happen in August,“ Sharma said. Only light rains in the next one week can be expected, he added.
