The southwest monsoon has, however, stayed away from the city despite making a further advance into some more parts of the south central Maharashtra and south Marathwada on Thursday.
The northern limit of the monsoon, which was passing through Harnai in Konkan and Satara in south central Maharashtra till Wednesday, now passes through Harnai and Parbhani in Marathwada in the state.
“Much of the monsoon advance on Thursday was over south Marathwada areas of Parbhani, Osmanabad and Beed besides the droughtprone areas of Sangli and Satara districts including Aatpadi, Jat, Maan and adjoining areas,” said Medha Khole, deputy director general (weather forecasting) at India Meteorological Department (IMD) here.
She said, “Conditions are becoming favorable for the monsoon to cover remaining parts of the state including Pune and Mumbai in the next three to four days. Till then, pre-monsoon rainfall activity will continue and the same has been active in most parts of the state where monsoon has yet to reach.”
“There has been fairly widespread rainfall in the drought-prone areas of Marathwada since Wednesday morning and same is the case with the parched areas of Sangli and Satara districts,” she added.
The monsoon progress on Thursday was mainly on account of a couple of factors. “The wind shear zone that prevailed over west Arabian sea has moved northwards. Monsoon winds have become strong while there has been fairly good cloud organization,” she said.
Khole said, “The influence of the low pressure area that prevailed over the Arabian sea too has reduced and this has led to the prospects of a further advance of monsoon over the remaining parts of state, especially Pune and Mumbai in next three to four days.”
A fairly strong pre-monsoon shower activity has also been reported from north central Maharashtra areas like Nashik and Ahmednagar districts.
For Pune city, the IMD has predicted rain or thundershowers towards afternoon or evening in the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature too is expected to drop due to cloudiness and humidity. “On Wednesday, the day temperature was 34 degrees celsius and the same went down to 33 degrees on Thursday. We expect the temperature to hover between 32 and 33 degrees in the next 24 hours,” said Khole.
The IMD’s all-India weather bulletin stated that apart from parts of south central Maharashtra and Marathwada, the monsoon has advanced into remaining parts of north interior Karnataka, most parts of Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh and central Bay of Bengal and parts of northwest and northeast Bay of Bengal.
Conditions are favorable for further advance of monsoon in some more parts of the northeastern states and parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, the bulletin stated.
