Water is a very crucial and critical resource available for us in this planet- Earth. 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water and out of that only 2.5% is fresh water. Drinking water is extremely important for all humans and other living beings. In this world where there are over 7 billion people nearly 1 billion do not have access to clean drinking water. But we are used to waste this precious resource on daily basis.
Thousands of litres of clean drinking water have been wasted at the pumping station opposite Empress Garden within the Pune Cantonment Board limits for a long time now. While people in villages near the city are parched and have to rely on tankers for water. Near Empress Garden a large amount of water leaks and pools by Pune-Satara Road. People use this leaking water to bathe, wash vegetables, clothes and vehicles. This water passes through Empress Garden and finally joins the Sopanbaug Nullah.
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is supplied with 1,070 million litres of water per day (MLD) from the Irrigation Department through a canal and a closed water pipeline. Of this, 60 per cent of the supply is transported through the canal. One stream goes to the water pumping and purification work station opposite Empress Garden and the other goes to Daund. As per data with PMC, it supplies 25 MLD water to defence establishments.
Everyone in the world can play a significant role by conserving the water and ensuring that it is not wasted. Let us do our bit and make a conscious and sincere effort everyday to save water. It is a fantastic resource to be used for our benefit hence let us not waste it.
