Alandi is considered as one of the holy places in the state for performing such ceremonies as Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj took samadhi here.
Presently, people put the ashes in a kalash kept on the banks of the river. However, since the kalash does not have a lid, the wind blows the ashes in the river, thereby polluting the water.
From now on, people would not be able to immerse the ashes of their near and dear ones in the sacred Indrayani river at the temple town of Alandi. Concerned about the pollution of the river, the Alandi Municipal Council (AMC) has prohibited immersion of ashes in the river.
