Barricades on Sopan Baug society’s road raises other residents’ hackles

Sopan Baug Cooperative Housing Society in Ghorpadi has installed barricades on a 2km road to slow down speeding vehicles. The road links motorists to Empress Botanical Garden, BT Kawade Road and Pune-Solapur highway .

The society’s members claim it is a private road. A week ago, barricades were installed at four places, including two inside and two outside the society . Other locals claimed the society has no authority to install the barricades as the road is under the development plan and maintained by PMC.

The society has argued that it tars and maintains the road and the thoroughfare does not come under the development plan. Businessman Sanjeev Brar said the barricades were put up for security reasons and for safety in a manner that they do not cause any inconvenience to motorists.

“There were complaints about speeding, but these have come down after the barricades were installed at strategic spots,“ he added. Former corporator Abhi jit Shivarkar said a large number of motorists coming from Hadapsar, Bhairobanala, B T Kavade Road and Pune-Solapur highway use the road through Sopan Baug to reach Camp and Pune railway station.

The sudden increase in the number of vehicles on this road has increased noise pollution and speeding. Residents of the bungalows facing the road are the worst-affected.The road was earlier used only by the residents of Sopan Baug and Empress Garden Society , Shivarkar said.

Subhash Chandra, who often travels by this road, said speeding is rampant in the morning and in the evening.“It is under control now after the barricades were installed. The move has brought respite to a large number of residents, including senior citizens, who go out for walks during this time,“ he added.

The society’s chairman Harish Thadaney said the barricades are at huge gaps and installed in such a way that school buses and cars can weave in and out with ease.

He said, “We have no plans to construct a gate to block traffic. We have not stopped vehicles from using the road.We have not received complaints from other residents that the installation of the barricades is causing an inconvenience.“

Thadaney said the road outside Empress Garden View society comes under PMC’s development plan, but the road outside Sopan Baug society is owned and maintained by them. “The civic body has only installed street lights on this road,“ he added.

Wanowrie-Kondhwa ward officer Madhav Deshpande said roads fell into both private and public category in Sopan Baug area, adding that records would have to be checked to ascertain the exact nature of the road with the barricades.
