Tempos block Kondhwa service road

Chorus Grows For Shifting Illegal Stand
The service road constructed by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on defence land in Kondhwa for ease of traffic after the construction of a flyover at Lullanagar Chowk began has been encroached upon by tempo operators who said they have been doing business here for several years and do not obstruct traffic.Tempo operator Nitin Bodke said, “Around 45 to 50 operators conduct business from this part of the defence land. We are ready to shift to an alternative site. The construction of the flyover has hampered our business. We have been operating on army land, but we keep it clean and we have not encroached upon the land. We park our vehicles outside the PMC and PCB slaughter houses whenever there is VVIP movement.“

Local residents like Irfan Shaikh from Mithanagar said while the flyover is being built, the tempo stand should be relocated elsewhere. Another resident Sandeep Shinde said crossing the chowk during peak hours has become a nightmare. He said labourers working on the flyover sleep by the roadside at night and they too must be shifted to prevent accidents.

Local corporator Aaarti Babar said, “The civic body has acquired some portions of defence land on the side margins of Kondhwa Road for constructing a service road. When work on the second column begins outside the tempo stand, we will request the operators to shift behind the fire brigade office near Inamdar Hospital. The tempo operators are ready to shift to the new place.“

Inspector Sandipan Sawant, in charge of Kondhwa traffic police, said, “The tempo stand is illegal, but whenever there are VVIP visits, we tell them to move out and they cooperate. The stand is not creating traffic congestion as of now.“
