To spread awareness of the importance of wearing helmets among two-wheeler riders, police on Sunday a road safety rally, held as part of the `Road Safety Week’.
Around 400 police personnel and 200 riding enthusiasts from different biker groups took part in the rally, which was jointly flagged off at the police headquarters in Shivajinagar by police commissioner Rashmi Shukla, Anil Whabi -director (finance) of Finolex Pipes, and Ravi Chawla, managing director of Gulf Oil Lubricants India Limited.
Over 1,600 helmets and masks were distributed to the police personnel during the rally. Sensitizing locals on following traffic rules and regulations for a smooth and safe ride, the participants also appealed to the motorists and pillion riders to wear helmets, for their own safety.
The participants travelled 36km, from the Shivajinagar headquarters via Savitribai Phule Pune Univer sity to Aundh, Pune-Mumbai road, Holkar bridge, Yerawada, Ramwadi, Kalyaninagar, Koregaon Park, Sadhu Vaswani bridge, Empress Gar den, Bhairoba Nala, Solapur bazar, Golibar Maidan, Swargate, Sarasbaug, Tilak Road, Shastri Road, Mhatre bridge, Nal Stop Chowk, Karve Road, Khandujibaba Chowk and College FergussonRoad. The rally culminated where it started -the police headquarters.
Making an appeal to everyone to follow rules, commissioner Shukla said: “Following traffic rules is for our own security and the security of our loved ones.“
She said that the traffic rules are very simple, and that following these rules should start from within oneself.
Ritu Chhabria, director of Finolex Industries and managing trustee of Mukul-Madhav Foundation, said the helmet drive also encourages safety among Pune’s police force.
