Haphazard parking of autorickshaws at important junctions along the Mumbai-Pune highway in Pimpri Chinchwad is causing massive traffic congestion during peak hours.
The obstruction is particularly prominent at the Nigdi terminus, Akurdi and Pimpri.At the Pimpri junction, autorickshaws are parked perpendicularly to the bus stop, causing nuisance for commuters.
Vishwajit Solanki, a Nigdi resident, said multiple autorickshaws are parked at the junction corner. “ Almost half the road is occupied by autorickshaws. Roadside vegetable and fruit vendors aggravate the problems,“ he said.
Shubham Lande, a commuter, said, “Traffic congestion is caused due to double parking of autorickshaws at the Babasaheb Ambedkar Chowk in Pimpri and the dedicated bus lane on the Nigdi-Dapodi BRTS corridor, on which bus operations have not started.“ On the Pimpri-Kalewadi ute off the highway, share route off the highway , share rickshaws are parked randomly near the junction. Some of them are parked perpendicu larly to the bus stop, bringing buses to halt on the middle of the road. Citizens have alleged total lack of action by the authorities against the disorderly parking.
Illegal parking of autorickshaws on the highway also plagues Chinchwad, Vallabhnagar and Kasarwadi. At Kasarwadi, autorickshaws block the road going to the main bazaar, troubling both pedestrians and motorists.
Amol Deshpande, the convener of the Pimpri Chinchwad Citizens’ Forum, said the situation at most places was chaotic with half the roads being blocked due to illegal par king of autorickshaws.
“Pimpri Chinchwad is a well-planned city with wide roads. The Regional Transport Office and the traffic branch of the city police should coordinate with autorickshaw drivers to curb traffic congestion,“ he said. “The traffic branch, however, has failed to take an initiative. For them, the city is a remote place,“ he added.
Assistant commissioner of police (traffic) Rajendra Bhamare said action was taken against autorickshaw drivers on a regular basis. “But the problems persist because they return to do the same thing,“ he added.
