The civic administration will form a committee to survey and finalise the location for a permanent slaughterhouse within the municipal limits.
Speaking to TOI, Tanaji Shinde, the additional commissioner of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) said, “A 20member committee including eight to nine civic and police officials, prominent social workers, representatives of Hindu and Muslim religions, representatives of Qureshi community who are dependent on the slaughterhouse and others will be formed to undertake the task. The meeting of the committee will be held once the Ganesh festival is over.“ Shinde said the civic body will shortlist around 15 to 20 plots where the slaughterhouse could be opened. “We will discuss the locations in the committee and with local residents before finalising a location. We will then have to seek the permission of the civic general body to construct the slaughterhouse. If the final location is not on a development plan then we will have to reserve the location by seeking permission from the state government,“ he said.
Shinde said the plot for a permanent slaughterhouse will be finalised by March 2017.The civic body had started a slaughterhouse in 1980s under the railway overbridge in Pimpri. But due to the growing urbanization in surrounding areas complaints starting coming about the foul smell and lack of cleanliness. The civic body was forced to close the slaughterhouse on the directives of the National Green Tribunal.
The civic body had finalized a location for the slaughterhouse near Dalco company in Pimpri in 2012, but construction could not be started as the state government stayed it.
