The general body of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has paved the way for adding 1,550 buses to the fleet of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamanal Limited (PMPML). The proposal to buy these buses was approved on Wednesday .
“The decision is a historic one.It will have a long term and positive impact on city’s public transport,“ said mayor Prashant Jagtap while speaking to reporters. He expressed hope that the decision will help check the city’s traffic problems.
Earlier, the proposal to procure 1,550 buses for PMPML was altered 1,550 buses for PMPML was altered by the two municipal corporations.In the proposal approved by PMPML in the first week of July , 500 buses were to be procured by Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad corporations. The remaining buses were to be taken from private operators and by raising a loan. The PMC was to procure 300 buses while the PCMC had to procure 200 buses.
The standing committee of both the corporations have now decided that they will procure only 100 buses first. Of the remaining 1,450 buses, 700 will be procured by taking loan and 750 will be provided by private operators.
The PMPML authorities had said that the city’s dream of having 1,550 additional public transport buses would remain unfulfilled if the PMC and PCMC fail to provide funds.
In another decision, the general body approved a cut in civic budget. Accordingly , 15% funds from the popular projects will be diverted to complete big infrastructure projects.
