Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has identified a new place near Hindustan Antibiotics Ltd in Pimpri for setting up of a slaughterhouse.
The civic administration was desperately searching a new place for slaughterhouse after it had shut down its animal meat market located under the Indira Gandhi flyover in Pimpri two years ago. Pedestrians and motorists were complaining of foul smell as the location was close to Pimpri railway station. There had been a demand for the past two decades for shifting of the abattoir and meat shops to another area. Currently, activities at the abattoir have been stopped and only meat sale was permitted at the market in Pimpri.
It has given one month for citizens to send suggestions and objections regarding the proposed site. As per the provisions of Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MR&TP) Act, 1966, suggestions and objections are invited for reserving the two-and-a-half acre situated on survey number 202, behind Delco Company near HAL for slaughterhouse.
A veterinary department civic official said that PCMC could not finalise the place as residents opposed to the various locations that it had identified. He said that the proposed site may not face public opposition as it was located far away from public places.
