RTOs Act On Reports Sent By Pune Cops
Pune:
Breaking traffic rules and getting away with it won’t be easy any more. The traffic branch of the Pune police is watching and apprehending many who violate traffic rules while on the road. They are also taking sterner action than just letting violators go after paying a fine.
As many as 1,862 driving licences of people on the roads were confiscated by the Pune police for offences ranging from driving rashly or neglecting traffic rules, in an inebriated condition and for other serious traffic violations till August 31, this year.
Of the total number of impounded licenses, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Pune, suspended 1,503 driving licences for periods ranging from 10 days to six months on the request of the traffic police.
Senior inspector (traffic) Anil Patil told TOI that these licences were seized by the traffic police between January and August, this year. “They were sent to the RTO with a detailed report of the offence committed by the driver,” he said.
Of the 1,862 driving licences, 338 were issued by the RTOs in other parts of the state. These RTOs are yet to suspend the licences, Patil said. The RTO offices from Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad have already taken action after going through the reports.
“Driving licences of autorickshaw drivers have been suspended for 10 days when they refused to ply for short distances. While the six months’ suspension has been imposed on the driving licences of offenders involved in wrong-side driving, rash and negligent driving and drunk driving,” Patil said.
At the same time, the special branch (SB) has withheld verification of character certificate and passports applications of as many as 289 people for traffic offences. “These persons violated different traffic rules and hence we have stalled their applications,” deputy commissioner of police (special branch) Ashok Morale said.
“A majority of these drivers, who verification process has been stalled, were involved in rash and negligent driving. At the same time, they have not paid the fine to the traffic police,” Morale said.
